Due to glaciation over 10,000 years ago, tall cliffs were cut from the ice, which created fish barriers and prevented fish from colonizing most high elevation waters.

For years non-native fish have been introduced to the high elevations of Yosemite for recreational purposes. They were carried by stock and even dropped by planes. Today, these non-native predators have a substantial impact on native species and ecosystems.

To address impacts, the park began an experimental restoration project in 2007 to remove trout from the lakes.
