Pika Plush

Ochotonoa princeps

The American pika, a member of the order Lagomorpha, is not a rodent, but related to rabbits and hares. Piles of drying vegetation, called haystacks, and a distinctive high-pitched call are the most recognizable indicators of active pika habitat. This creature lives in talus slopes high in the mountains.

Changing climate alter plant populations where Pika feed and reduce insulating snowpack that protects them from severe cold. Pikas are sensitive to temperatures above 77.9°F (25.5°C); therefore, they are most active during cooler parts of the day.
