Yosemite is home to 300-500 black bears. Despite the name, most black bears in Yosemite have brown or blond fur. Black bears are a symbol of Yosemite wilderness, and to help keep bears wild Yosemite Conservancy donors have supported protection of black bears by funding grants for bear-proof food lockers and GPS technology to monitor the animals' movements.

You can do your part and keep bears wild by properly storing your food and scented items in bear proof lockers during your visit and following the posted speed limit signs.
