Falco peregrinus

The name "Peregrine" means "wanderer", an apt description for a species with one of the longest migrations of any North American bird. The Peregrine Falcon can be found on all continents except Antarctica. It is a very fast flier, averaging 25-34 mph in normal flight and reaching speeds of up to 69 mph in direct pursuit of prey. In dropping towards its prey, called stooping, the Peregrine may reach speeds of 200 mph.

To help raise understanding of wildlife in the park, Yosemite Conservancy helps fund critical wildlife research conducted by Yosemite National Park Service. These projects, in turn, inform strategies and conservation plans to help ensure the future of these wonderful animals.
