Dryocopus pileatus

The Pileated Woodpecker is one of the largest forest birds in North America. Nearly the size of a crow, they have a bright red crest, a large black body, and white stripes down their face and neck; males are distinguished by red "mustache" stripes that the females lack. Pileated woodpeckers prefer mature deciduous or mixed forests with large, standing dead trees and downed wood. They drill unique rectangular-shaped holes in rotted trees to feed on carpenter ants and other insects, and also occasionally eat wild fruits and nuts.
