Ochotona princeps

Weighing in at about 6 ounces, this diminutive relative of the rabbit forages for plants during the day among the rocks above treeline and on the alpine tundra. It dries the grasses it collects for food and then stores it in sheltered "haypiles" for the winter. Active year round, a Pika's piercing whistles warn of nearby predators and intruders such as coyotes, hawks, and humans.

To help raise understanding of wildlife in the park, Yosemite Conservancy helps fund critical wildlife research conducted by Yosemite National Park Service. These projects, in turn, inform strategies and conservation plans to help ensure the future of these wonderful animals.
